Can you get an STI by masturbating?

It’s good to know that when it comes to STIs, the modes of transmission are..

  • Blood
  • Sexual Fluids (semen and vaginal fluids)
  • Skin to skin contact
  • Breast milk and vaginal birth

In order for someone to contract an STI, they would need to engage in sexual activity with a person who already has an STI in which one or more of these modes would come into play.

However, a person can get an STI from a shared sex toy. Be sure to wash all sex toys before and after use.  If someone is sharing a sex toy with someone else, use a a condom, or clean it in between.

As long as you’re not harming yourself or others during masturbation, and you are engaging in masturbation in private, it can be a safe and healthy way to explore your sexuality without risk of STIs or pregnancy.  If you have more questions about masturbation, consider talking to a trusted adult.
