How old do you have to be to get an IUD?

Good question.

Lets talk a little bit about IUDs.

IUDs (Intrauterine Devices) are long term, reversible methods of birth control used to effectively prevent pregnancy.

There are two types of IUDs: Hormonal and Non-Hormonal. Hormonal IUDs work by thickening the cervical mucus. The Paragard immobilizes sperm, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg.

IUDs are more than 99% effective for 3-10 years (depending on the IUD). IUDs do not prevent against any STIs!

There is no age minimum to get an IUD. If someone decided they wanted one, they would just need to call and make an appointment to get one. At their visit they will discuss with a provider the different types of IUDs, side effects, and if an IUD would be best for them.
