Are doctors able to look at a vagina and determine whether you are sexually active?

There is no “test” to determine if someone has been sexually active before.

There is something called a hymen, however, a hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the vagina.

It can stretch over time due to things like tampons, sports, riding a bike, etc. Some people are born without hymens! So if someone’s hymen is stretched or not in tact, this has nothing to do with sexual activity.

However, if someone is sexually active, it is important to share that information with their doctor so they can provide accurate and comprehensive health care.

It might seem intimidating to share that information, but it is the job of a doctor to make someone feel safe and comfortable! Because of the law in Colorado, teens can access sexual health services without the consent or notification of their parent or guardian. While Teen Clinic encourages teens to have a trusted adult they can talk to it is not required.  So, someone does not have to bring a parent when discussing things like sexual health with their doctor.

If you want to make an appointment at Teen Clinic to discuss any of these things, or if you have more questions, you can give us a call at 303-442-5160
