Can you get an STI or other sexually transmitted diseases using a dildo or sex toy?

Great question!

Masturbation can be a safe way to explore your body and learn more about your sexual likes and dislikes.  Masturbation doesn’t come with a risk of STI transmission or pregnancy, and it doesn’t require the same communication skills as being sexually active with someone else. Self-masturbation can also help you figure out your sexual boundaries and preferences before you become sexually active with others. Masturbation also won’t damage or harm your body in any way.

But, because some STIs can be transmitted through sexual fluids, if partners are sharing a dildo or sex toy back and forth, STIs could be transmitted that way.

It would be a good idea to make sure sex toys are clean in between partners, and if applicable, putting a barrier method like a condom on the sex toy, and changing it in between partners. This will reduce the risk of STIs being transmitted.
