I got the Nexplanon on July 27th….

…started my period on August 4 and had unprotected sex where my boyfriend finished inside of me on August 7. It has been about 4 days and my period is still going. We waited a week after getting the implant before having sex but is there any chance that I may be pregnant?

Thanks for asking!

It takes the Nexplanon (and all hormonal forms of birth control) 1 week to become effective.  It is recommended to use a backup method during this week (like condoms or abstinence). After someone has had the Nexplanon for 1 week, it protects against pregnancy up to 99% for 3 years, even if ejaculation in the vagina occurs.

It sounds like you waited a week, which is great!  So the risk of pregnancy would be very low in this situation, because the Nexplanon is 99% effective.

It is also important to know that a very common side effect of the Nexplanon can be irregular bleeding. Some people lose their period completely; some have irregular spotting, and some people bleed more regularly.

The reason this happens is because Nexplanon contains the hormone Progesterone, which over time stops the uterine lining from building up. Sometimes it will still build up and then shed. This is why someone may not have a period, or may have irregular bleeding. This is completely okay and healthy. This could explain the irregular bleeding, but if you are concerned you can always make an appointment to talk to a medical provider.

Remember, hormonal forms of birth control like the Nexplanon do not reduce the risk of STIs, only condoms and dental dams can do this.
