I had missed my Depo Shot and started my period….

…..And me and my boyfriend decided to have sex. He came in me 3 times and after that I got the Depo Shot. Is there a chance I may be pregnant?

Once someone has had a hormonal form of birth control (like the Depo shot)  for 1 week it can help prevent pregnancy up to 99% (even if ejaculation occurs in the vagina).  It takes a full week for the hormones to be integrated into the body and start working.

In order for the Depo Shot to be effective, a person needs to get the shot every 3 months.

If you were due for your Depo Shot, and never received it, and then had unprotected sex there would be a risk of pregnancy. If you received another shot, you would need to wait a full 7 days for it to become effective again.

You can take Emergency Contraception which can be taken up to 5 days after the sexual contact but it is more effective the sooner it is taken. Emergency Contraception works by delaying ovulation.

We would then recommend taking a pregnancy test. The earliest you can take a pregnancy test is 14 days after the sexual contact to get an accurate result.

Remember, the Depo Shot does not protect against STIs, only condoms and dental dams can.
