That is a great question! Lets talk a little bit about the Nexplanon.
The Nexplanon is a single matchstick-sized rod that is placed underneath the skin in your upper arm. A nurse or doctor inserts the rod. Once inserted, the rod releases hormones gradually for up to three years. The Nexplanon is 99% effective after someone has had it for 1 week.
If someone is getting a Nexplanon for the first time, they need to refrain from unprotected sex (this is referring to sex without a condom or another birth control method) for 14 days prior to the insertion. This is to ensure that there is no risk of pregnancy.
If there has been unprotected sex during this time, there is a chance the provider will not insert the Nexplanon that day. At Teen Clinic, a provider will always do a pregnancy test before inserting a Nexplanon.
We hope this clears some things up!
