I received the birth control implant last Tuesday and had unprotected sex that same week on Friday…..

…… Was the implant effective or is there a possibility that I might be pregnant?

The Nexplanon is a single matchstick-sized rod that is placed underneath the skin in your upper arm. A nurse or doctor inserts the rod. Once inserted, the rod releases hormones gradually for up to three years.

After someone has the Nexplanon for 1 week, Nexplanon protects against pregnancy up to 99% for 3 years, even if ejaculation in the vagina occurs.

If unprotected sex occurred before that first week, there is a risk of pregnancy.

Emergency contraception is an option, which can be taken up to 5 days.

Remember, The Nexplanon does not reduce the risk of STIs, only condoms/dental dams can do this!
