If you use Implanon/Nexplanon as a birth control method, do the rods stay in your arm after the three years?

Great question!

The Implanon/Nexplanon is a hormonal birth control method that is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 3 years.

To insert the Implanon/Nexplanon rod, a clinician will apply a mild anesthetic.  After that, the rod is inserted just beneath the surface of the skin in the inner upper arm through a small incision. This is where the rod will stay for up to 3 years. You can choose to keep the rod in place for the entire 3 years, or have it removed any time before that. If you choose to keep the rod in for the entire 3 years, it is removed by a clinician from the same tiny incision that it was inserted through.

If, for whatever reason, you cannot get the rod removed right away, it will not negatively affect the body. But remember, after 3 years the rod will not be an effective method of birth control.
