…but I got the Nexplanon implant 3 days ago. Is there a chance I could still get pregnant?
Thanks for asking!
It takes the Nexplanon (and all hormonal forms of birth control) 1 week to become effective. It is recommended to use a backup method during this week (like condoms or abstinence). After someone has had the Nexplanon for 1 week, it protects against pregnancy up to 99% for 3 years, even if ejaculation in the vagina occurs.
Since unprotected sec occurred before a full 7 days, there would be a risk of pregnancy in this situation. Emergency contraception is an option, which can be taken up to 5 days after the sexual contact, but is more effective the sooner it is taken. Emergency Contraception works by delaying ovulation.
Remember, The Nexplanon does not reduce the risk of STIs, only condoms/dental dams can do this!
