Great question! Lets talk a little bit about the Nexplanon.
The Nexplanon is a single matchstick-sized rod that is placed underneath the skin in your upper arm. A nurse or doctor inserts the rod. Once inserted, the rod releases hormones gradually for up to three years.
Once you’ve had the Nexplanon inserted, you will have to abstain or use a back-up method (like condoms) for one week until it will be effective in preventing pregnancy. In fact, for all hormonal methods of birth control, it takes one week for the hormones to “kick in” and be effective in preventing pregnancy.
After this one week the Nexplanon is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to three years
Remember, hormonal methods, like the Nexplanon do NOT protect against STIs. Only condoms and dental dams can do that!
