So if I have a cold sore on my mouth….

….and I give my girlfriend oral will she get Herpes down there?

This is a great question! Lets talk a little bit about Herpes!

There are two different types of Herpes, Herpes Simplex Virus I & II.  Type I presents itself as cold sores on the the mouth so it is not considered an STI unless it’s transmitted through unprotected oral sex (mouth to genital contact).

Type II is usually called “Genital Herpes” because it presents itself as open sores on the genitals, and is transmitted through unprotected sexual skin to skin contact.

Even though Herpes Type I is not considered an STI, if someone has Herpes Type I and preforms oral sex on a person, it can transmit to that person’s genitals.

Also, if someone has Herpes Type II and someone preforms oral sex on that person, Herpes type II can be transmitted to the mouth.

Using condoms and dental dams can help reduce the risk of STI transmission during sexual contact.
