What does it mean if the labia majora, clitoris area is swollen after sex?

During arousal, blood flow to the genitals increases. In women, this causes the labia—or lips of the vagina—to become puffy. The clitoris may also be more pronounced and sensitive. In other words, it’s normal for female genitalia to be swollen-looking after sex.  Afterward, as arousal tapers off, blood flow to the genitals will decrease, and the labia and clitoris should return to normal.

An erection, by the way, is also the result of this extra blood flow: spongy tissue in the penis fills with blood, increasing the size and firmness of the organ. Blood leaves the penis when arousal decreases, and the penis returns to normal size.

If your labia or clitoris are swollen for several days without arousal, or if you experience pain, itching, bumps, or abnormal discharge, be sure to see a medical health professional. You can make an appointment at Teen Clinic by calling 303-442-5160.
